Buteyko breathing has made a world of difference in my mood. Do you personally use the Frolov or Breathslim device, and which would you recommend?
Dave Foster, April 9, 2016
I recommend either one. They are both good. What you want to do is, put the device into a jug, and cover with a cloth, with the mouthpiece sticking out. That creates a bigger reservoir for CO2 and makes it effective for much higher levels of health.
Over a few months, things like anxiety will fade away and blood pressure will normalize. Everything gets good with this.I use a koolaid pitcher. Mouthpiece sticks out and I cover with a towel.

I was wondering if you knew anything about Buteyko breathing and activation of the vagus nerve. What do you think of deep breathing?
Dave Foster, April 12, 2016
It is not ideal to have a relaxing deep breath very OFTEN.

It is not part of the protocol. It is to be avoided.
However, once you do this awhile, you find that an occasional deep breath feels GREAT.
You can hyperventilate occasionally if you have to, but it’s best not to.
Also, keep in mind, it will take a few months to REALLY see the benefits, especially mental. You will probably end up without any anxiety, and in a mental place you never dreamed possible. And libido, everything gets better and better. It keeps getting better.
For how long each day do you practice your Buteyko excercises?
DAVE FOSTER, APRIL 12, 2016
I used to do 2 – 4 sessions a day, 15 or 20 minutes. I don’t need it anymore.

My mood and energy have improved, but it’s the third day, and I feel sick: nausea, no appetite, acne, chest tightness and an irregular sleeping pattern. I’ve been reading that this often occurs for beginners with the Buteyko method. Did you have a similar experience?
DAVE FOSTER, APRIL 16, 2016
It’s pretty normal. It passes. Calcium and magnesium help a lot. I wouldn’t stop breathing exercises. It’s a cleansing reaction. It passes and you will be are a much higher level.

I’ve been using the BreathSlim for a few days, and I’m surprised at how good I feel. It really does have an anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effect! How long did you continue on with a beginner program, and are you worried about encouraging habitual mouth breathing?
DAVE FOSTER, APRIL 18, 2016
During the session, mouth breathing is fine. Because you’re loading with CO2. You have the right idea, using the jug, increasing your exhale length of time, doing brief breath holds at the bottom of the exhale. You’re doing great. It’s wonderful to see your quick progress because you work at it, and you’re young. Older guys take much, much longer to get progress.

If I wanted a CP of 60 I’d have to work at it again and I don’t have the will to do that at this point.
I’m up to the intermediate stage of the breathing with a 20 second breathing cycle, inhaling and exhaling by mouth. I fill the device with around five teaspoons of water as resistance. I’ve noticed that I’m having fever-like symptoms, especially in the morning, with a complete loss of appetite, nausea, and some hair loss. My vision has cleared up amazingly, though.

I haven’t seen that in any one I’ve coached, as far as hair loss is concerned. You could STOP the breathing exercises for a few days. It is VERY probable that the mental symptoms are a cleansing reaction. These are VERY common when you rapidly increase CP.

Are you taking calcium and magnesium? I would maybe back off on the breathing exercises for a few days. Stop altogether and see how things stabilize.
I’m not taking any supplements but am eating enough salt. I might look into supplementing additional electrolytes.
