Collapse has been on the minds of many Americans for several decades, but we need to understand the strength of the American system. Despite its flaws, the U.S. economy is one of the most robust in the world, with relatively low levels of absolute poverty compared to other nations. However, the system is not without its challenges.

One area of concern is transfer payments, or the forced redistribution of wealth through programs like welfare. While these programs are essential for providing a safety net for those in need, there is a risk that they could become unsustainable if the economy were to take a downturn.

To put this into context, we can look at the example of China. In 1978, all Chinese citizens worked for the state, but today, only one-third do. This is a testament to the remarkable transformation of the Chinese economy. However, it also highlights the potential dangers of a centralized economy that relies too heavily on state control.
